MRC just finished removing the first shipwreck from the waters off Vancouver BC-the former “Spudnik”.

The Spudnik WAS an 1100 ton steel hulled former Navy vessel converted to a barge.

The ship was old and “ripe” (wasted, corroded, rusted and deteriorated).

Jordan, the President of MRC managed the project with a small crew first removing hydrocarbons, wood and concrete while the vessel was sunk in the river. Divers installed magnetic patches outside the hull and Jordan and crew installed them inside the hull, until all water ingress was stopped and all liquids removed in place, the vessel was re-floated.

Once the heavy lift submersible barge arrived, the Spudnik was positioned over the submersible lift barge and lifted out of the water, high and dry, ready for dismantling.

In a few short days, the Spudnik was dismantled into 8 lifts (sections), the first and heaviest lift shown below (310,000 lbs or 155 tons).

Portable shears processed the scrap into pieces 2 x 4 feet, furnace ready feedstock and now on route to the steel mill.

Metals are infinitely recyclable, so maybe the Spudnik will return as razor blades, or new Cadillacs!

So remember the car you’re driving, or the razor you used to shave, it may have been part of an old ship once.

Take Care Friends,

Wayne
